After more than 50 years, former Airborne GI Carl Stiber (76 years old) visited his former garrison Gablingen, together with a friend from Augsburg. Also invited was Amerika in Augsburg e.V. society, who utilized the meeting of the veterans for extensive conversations about the history of Gablingen Kaserne. After a common lunch in Gersthofen, the Northern Kaserne area was visited in order to show Mr. Stiber the remnants of the former military installations.
Carl Stiber was a member of 11th Airborne Div, 188th Airborne Infantry Regiment, Tank Company (18 Tanks M47/M48A1). He lived in Bldg 439 in the Northern part of the Kaserne. Once again, it was impressive to see how former „occupation soldiers“ enjoy the openmindedness of today´s Augsburgers when they come back to the area of their former service.
Amerika in Augsburg e.V. wants to point out the importance of this friendsip between the nations and would like to thank Mr. Stiber for the photographs of his military service in Gablingen as well as for the donation of a flag of the legendary 11th Airborne, called „Angels“.
