Farewell in the Rosenau Stadium

In the evening of June 19th, 1998, the last U.S. forces stationed in Augsburg lowered the Star-Spangeled Banner and thus terminated the 53 year long presence of the U.S. in Fugger City in front of 12,000 guests and on-lookers. When the flood lights were finally turned off, a German Bundeswehr unit celebrated the Großer Zapfenstreich (grand taps) in honor of the departing U.S. forces. Numerous German guests of honor and celebrities plus as many as 12 former U.S. Commanders who had come for a week of festivities provided a worthy background for the „Goodbye Americans“ ceremony. The last commander was COL Barbara Fast, 66th Military Intelligence Group.

Seven years later, when the U.S. reminiscence began to fade away, the Amerika in Augsburg e.V. society was founded in order keep the history of postwar Augsburg alive.
